The Fold explores how the clothes we wear relate to the world we live in.
The chiton is one of the earliest garments that dates back to 480- 323 BCE. Similar garments like the peplos, tunics and stolas were characterized by their unique folds and drapes. The fold itself is a contradiction, it contains something bigger than itself, much like the human experience.
To understand clothes is to understand the individual. Clothing is an extension of who we are and what we believe in. I have been fascinated by how people dress for as long as I can remember. Whether it was someone who dressed to the nines or looked like they rolled out of bed, there was more to their story than the clothes on their backs. They were giving the world a version of who they are (or wish they were).
Folds are not only found in garments, they can be a series of ripples that have a greater impact than meets the eye. The French philosopher Gilles Deleuze believed the fold is βan inside to life, labour and language, in which man is embedded.β Deleuze is alluring to the fact that the fold is an infinite series of routes and ripples where in lies existence. The fold is a necessary labyrinth that requires exploration.
